Email - Anti Spam Measures

MyServer users automatically receive a subscription to our Anti-Spam measures for UCE (unwanted commercial email).  We filter email before it gets to our servers using a piece of software called ASSP.  After this first level of filtering, our mail server itself can also filter for spam from SpamHaus a server database lookup service.  All this happens before the email gets to the users mailbox or is forwarded on to other email accounts elsewhere (perhaps to a Blackberry).  This also means that users do not experience their webmail being full of unwanted emails either.

Our email filters learn as they are working as to which emails are UCE.  However, should our filter pass an email that is UCE which it missed, please forward this email to asspspam@markandrewsmith.net and it will thank you and add this into its database.  Delete the copy in your mailbox.

Where does rejected email go?
All email that is rejected as UCE is placed into a catch all bin for 7 days after which time it is deleted.  Should you require us to look into this bin for an email please send an email to support@markandrewsmith.com along with the following information:-

  • The email address it was addressed to
  • The email address it was addressed from
  • The subject line of the email
  • Approximate time of the email

Without the above, we would have to look through 900,000 emails a day, so we will need some pointers to be able to find the email.

We can filter email with three difference settings, hard, soft and none.

Hard Filtering
This is our toughest filter setting and all emails are scanned and if they are found to look like they are UCE, then they are rejected.  Typically, we will set up private email addresses like our fictitious user  martin@joebloggs.com to work in this fashion.
Important: When martin first goes live on our system, he will find most email addressed to him is rejected.  This is because the filter has not yet learnt his preferences.  Martin can then get around this by emailing those contacts (or perhaps all contacts) he wishes to immediately communicate with.

Soft Filtering
This is what we use for mail groups like sales@, enquiries@, info@, etc., for your domain.  Any email that is inbound and is a borderline case is given the benefit of the doubt and allowed through.

No Filtering
We can set this to allow any email addresses to an email address to be allowed through.  Please note, you will receive UCE with this setting.
