DNS

Humans like to refer to websites with URLs (uniform resource locators) and they are usually like www.MarkAndrewSmith.com, however, computers prefer IP addresses, for example, 82.138.234.125 which is more difficult to remember.  We can use a service called DNS (domain name service) to convert one to the other or back again.

Owning a domain name does not have to be done with your web designer or website hosting provider, you can if you wish:-

  • transfer the domain name to the hosting company
  • keep the domain name and point the name at the hosting companies servers
  • keep the domain name and delegate all conversions to be done with the hosting companies servers

The last one is our preference.  You are in control of the domain, as it is YOUR domain, and you ask us to perform all conversions.  This as the advantage that we can implement some really advance settings on your behalf.  For example, we can implement test environements, multiple links (in case of failure) etc.  An example of this can be shown:-

C:\>nslookup www.markandrewsmith.com
Server: ns1-edi.blueyonder.net
Address: 62.31.64.39

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.markandrewsmith.com
Addresses: 82.138.234.125, 86.53.239.125

Here our own website domain is services by three different network links.  We can do this for your webmail.<your-domain> or a test website perhaps called test.<your-domain>.  All this is only possible if you delegate DNS authority to our servers so that they can do this.
